“A cornerstone of the early Zionist ideal was “to make the desert bloom”. The water needed to achieve this unsustainable dream comes mainly from the exploitation of the river Jordan basin. 75 per cent of the water of the river was diverted to Israeli territories as early as 1964. Israel’s discriminatory policies and practices denying Palestinians access to water are striking if compared to Israeli intensive-irrigation farms, lush gardens and swimming pools.” [x]

Christopher Gideon

Within Christopher Gideon there is a combination of artist, graphic designer and architect. All of these influences are evident in the style of his artworks, but it is the meaning behind them that we should focus on. As Gideon describes the themes within his works, he discusses the sense fear always present in our culture.

“My body of work is an ongoing collection of exorcisms, casting out the fears, icons, and suppressed visions implanted by American Culture; often expressed in imagery that is as much satirical as it is socially relevant. My message tiptoes between cautionary metaphor and paranoid confession. Observations of America’s instability beckon a probing look into man’s blind faith in everything. God… technology… ourselves. I expose these topics through a world of subversion. In my domain, symbols of America are defeated through self-deprecation.”

As one looks at his works the many layers shine through. Technology mixes with anatomy as arms become wires and planes become veins. Overall, Gideon’s work focuses on our cyborg selves, and in his exaggeration he reveals truths about our lives. For more of his work, click here.

Today in history: Vilma Espín born, April 7, 1930.

Espín was a leader in the Cuban revolution and in the women’s movement in Cuba. She was part of the July 26 Movement that overthrew the Batista dictatorship in 1959. After the revolution, Espín was a founder of the Federation of Cuban Women in 1960 and was its leader until she died in 2007. She headed Cuba’s delegations to many international women’s Congresses. She was a member of the National Assembly and the Council of State of Cuba, and also of the Central Committee and the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba. She was given the honorary title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba, and was a recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize.
